River Rescue Called Off

River Rescue Called Off

With the torrential rainfall over the last few days taking its toll on local police and fire personnel, a river rescue was called off Saturday morning after a reported car in the river turned out to only be a concrete barrier.

A jogger, running along the Los Angeles River, contacted fire officials after reportedly seeing a car in the raging river water.

Firefighters responded when they received other reports of a vehicle in the water near the 5 Freeway and Zoo Dr. in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles.

Fire officials arrived on the scene around 8 a.m. and searched the area. Aerial footage showed several Los Angeles City firefighters in the area investigating the reports.

With the wicked weather, there are things you can do to be safe on the roads. Keep your eyes scanning the road ahead, looking for any potential hazards. Slow down, this will help compensate for a car’s longer stopping distance in the rain.

If a car begins to slip and lose traction, don’t slam on the brakes. In the rain, the limited traction will cause brakes to lock up and lengthen a car’s stopping distance.

The driver died at the scene. The victim has been identified as a 31-year-old male from Woodland Hills, says California Highway Patrol Officer Leland Tang.

Man hospitalized after car plunges over cliff

Man hospitalized after car plunges over cliff

A man was hospitalized Friday after he drove his car over a cliff. The car landed in the ocean off of Palos Verdes in the 1300 block of Paseo del Mar, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The accident was reported around 2 a.m. The rescuers found the 19-year-old man 300 feet below the cliff. The car was partially submerged.

“It was well damaged and he was apparently trapped inside the vehicle with water rushing in,” Cpt. Don Tianaka said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

Reports indicate that the man may have been suicidal. As rescuers got to his location, he was seen flashing a light at rescuers to alert them of his location and condition, according to officials.

“It was reported that he said he didn’t want to drown. He did state that he did it on purpose, to drive over the side,” Cpt. Tianaka said.

A witness said the man stopped his car at the cliff’s edge and sat for a while. Then he pushed the gas pedal and drove the car over, Palos Verdes Estates police Sgt. Luke Hellinga said in an interview with the Daily Breeze.

Once the man was rescued, he was airlifted to Harbor UCLA Medical Center. He’s reported to be in serious condition. The accident is still under investigation by officials.

More people now die of suicide than in car accidents

More people now die of suicide than in car accidents

Source: (IIHS)

In the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released in May, there were 33,687 deaths from car accidents and 38,364 suicides in 2010.

Suicide, typically viewed as an issue with teens and the elderly, is increasing amongst middle-aged Americans, ages 35-64; many baby boomers are facing economic uncertainty that is then combined with easy access to prescription painkillers. Poisoning deaths were up 24 percent over the 10-year period from 1999 to 2010.

From 1999 to 2010, the suicide rate among Americans ages 35 to 64 rose by nearly 30 percent, to 17.6 deaths per 100,000 people, up from 13.7. While suicide rate is up amongst both middle-aged men and women, the suicide rate for middle-aged men was 27.3 deaths per 100,000, while for women it was 8.1 deaths per 100,000.

“It is the baby boomer group where we see the highest rates of suicide,” said the C.D.C.’s deputy director, Ileana Arias, in an interview with The New York Times. “There may be something about that group, and how they think about life issues and their life choices that may make a difference.” Dr. Arias noted that the higher suicide rates might be due to a series of life and financial circumstances unique to the baby boomer generation. They are often coping with caring for aging parents while still providing financial and emotional support to adult children.

The increase in suicides is unsettling as there is still a stigma around it.

Four killed in Compton car crash after police pursuit

Four killed in Compton car crash after police pursuit

Four people were killed Saturday when a high-speed pursuit by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies ended with the pursued car slamming into another vehicle.

The accident happened about 12:30 a.m. at the intersection of West Greenleaf Boulevard and South Wilmington Avenue in Compton, said Sheriff’s Sgt. Peter Ramirez. The pursuit started after the car was pulled over. Deputies believed the vehicle matched a description of a vehicle used in a shooting that had just occurred. The car sped off once the deputies exited their cruiser.

The deputies pursued the vehicle for about two miles when the car ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle. The suspect’s vehicle slammed into a light pole, a brick wall, and a garage and flipped over before catching fire.

The other vehicle involved in the crash, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, veered out of control and hit another wall. Only one person was in that vehicle.

Only one victim was identified by late Saturday, but it wasn’t clear which vehicle Stacey Garcia, 30, of Los Angeles, was in.

Several family members at the scene told The Los Angeles Times that two of the people in the pursued car were Larry Gilmore, 35, and Shawnice Osborne, 20.

“It’s terrible to see two cars so mangled up,” said Keith Wright in an interview with The Times, who said he was Gilmore’s brother.

The events unfolded after a report of “multiple shots fired” came from the 100 block of West Indigo Street in Compton, Ramirez said.

The shooting, pursuit, and accident are all under investigation.
