A math teacher at Manchester Valley High School in Carroll County recently died due to a car accident. The incident involved his vehicle and a private s school bus. The victim was Devin Michael Spence. He was a 24 year-old from Westminster. Spence was killed when his 2001 Ford Focus collided with the bus, according to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.

The bus was carrying five students and the driver. Five students and a driver were on the bus, which was transporting students to Delone Catholic High School in Pennsylvania. None of the students in the bus were injured. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred just before 7 a.m. The incident was reported on Sullivan Road near its intersection with Route 27 between Westminster and Manchester.

The Ford was heading north along Sullivan Road, entering a turn in the 1700 block, when it lost control and slid across the centerline. The Ford then spun sideways and collided with the oncoming school bus that was entering the turn southbound. According to the officials, the icy road conditions are believed to have been a factor.

After hitting the bus, the Ford caught fire, according to the report, and crews from the Manchester and Westminster volunteer fire companies responded. Spence was declared dead at the scene.

Spence had taught at Manchester Valley High School since January 2012, according to the Sheriff’s Office. This morning the school sent an email to parents informing them of the accident and the teacher’s death, and asking that the school community “keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Grandma

Kathryn “Kitty” O’Farrell was 79 years old. She was hit and killed by a by a car as she was attending a vigil. The vigil she was participating in was because of a death in a car accident also.

Her Neighbors claimed that O’Farrell help get a stop light installed less than a block away for the location of the accident.  Her goal was to slow traffic on El Camino Avenue and Castro. Her daughter, Kelly DeLeon, explained that mother was a vibrant woman. She was very well known and had many friends. DeLeon said she was at the scene of a fatal accident the day before and helped the injured driver who police say was driving while drunk.  She crossed the street during the evening vigil put on by the friends and family of Demaris Ingram who was killed in the accident.

“It tugged at her heart so when she saw them and came to give them flowers,” said DeLeon.

She apparently couldn’t make it across the street because there were too many people.  Neighbors say they tried to get a motorist to slow down but O’Farrell was struck and killed instantly.  The street was also dark because copper thieves had rendered street lights useless.

“My mind was in shock, she was so nice. She always helped people in the neighborhood,” said Anna Cervantes who has lived across from O’Farrell for 35 years.

O’Farrell’s daughter says she had just found out that her kids were paying for a trip to Ireland, and was also celebrating her 43rd anniversary of being together with her long time boyfriend.

As surprising as it may be, Los Angeles is leading the nation in hit-and-run vehicle collisions. As tragic as this may be, there are two Los Angeles City Council members are trying to change this. Both are vowing to do something about it and looking to find justice.

Los Angeles accidents are at an all time high. After one is involved in an accident with pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcycles or other vehicles, as many as 20,000 Los Angeles vehicle motorists flee the scene each year.  Councilman Joe Buscaino made this claims in a press conference before the government body’s public safety committee.

Joe Buscaino is the Harbor area councilman and claims that about 4,000 of the people involved in these types of collisions are injured or killed. In his motion, filed Jan. 4, Buscaino is currently asking the Los Angeles Police Department to detail its efforts on trying to cut down on hit-and-run incidents.

Councilman Mitchell Englander is currently the chairman of the public safety committee. He explains that he is working on a strategy to change statistics and keep these people from running away after an accident.”We have to toughen our laws,” said Englander, who is urging mandatory impounds of vehicles owned by hit and run drivers.

Whereas about 11% of collisions nationwide involve a driver who does not stop after a collision, in Los Angeles the driver fails to stop in 48% of reported incidents.

Hit and Run accidents happen too many times in Los Angeles.  If you or a loved one has been involved in an accident and the person at fault has run, it is necessary to seek legal help.  These types of accidents can end in horrible injuries and even death. Nutrition Assistance for Puerto Rico is a fede...

Isabella Foods is located in an El Paso, Texas establishment. They are currently recalling approximately 685 pounds of tamale products. The reason for the recall is because of misbranding and undeclared allergens. The product currently contains wheat or soy. The problem is that these known allergens are not mentioned on the product label.

The following products are going to be recalled: 36-oz. packages containing 12 “Isabella Foods of El Paso Green Chicken Tamales” and bearing the establishment number “P-13389″ inside the USDA mark of inspection and 36-oz. packages containing 12 “Isabella Foods of El Paso Red Pork Tamales” and bearing the establishment number “EST. 1960″ inside the USDA mark of inspection.

These specific products were produced through Jan. 18, 2013.  They were distributed and sold at local markets and retail stores in the El Paso, Texas area.  The problem was found by the FSIS in-plant personnel. They found the problem during a label review. The FSIS inspector found soy in the textured vegetable protein ingredient. During the same review, the FSIS inspector found that wheat was a subcomponent of the masa flour ingredient. This ingredient was found in the red pork tamale product but not declared on the label. FSIS and the company have received no reports of physical harm due to consumption of these products. The FSIS has advised who is concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and to ensure that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers. Consumers and members of the media with questions about the recall should contact the company’s Owner, Nielson Guerra, at (915) 590-1899.

If you or a loved one has been injured because of a recalled product it is necessary to seek medical help but also seek legal counsel. Faulty Airbags on Toyotas

Toyota FJ Cruiser

Toyota FJ Cruiser (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

A Toyota distributor is recalling 3,235 cars in select states. According to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the specific reason for these recalls is airbag sensors that may malfunction.
Southeast Toyota Distributors of Deerfield Beach, Fla., one of several regional distributors that import and prep Toyotas, may not have calibrated the airbag weight sensors. These problems can be found in the front passenger seats of certain 2009-2013 Toyota models. Fortunately only models sold in Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia are affected. Specifically it is only those equipped with seat covers, seat heaters or headrest-mounted LCD screens. No Lexus or Scion models are affected.

The problem is that in an accident, the passenger-side airbag may deploy improperly. The weight sensors determine whether to deploy the airbag if it detects the seat is empty or if a small child is sitting up front. Toyota, is not issuing this specific recall. This is because the distributor is responsible for installing factory accessories. These can include products such as rear DVD entertainment systems, on these vehicles. The distributor said the problem was limited to two employees. Unfortunately the employees were not using the required calibration tools.

The vehicles are as follows: 2009-2012 Tacoma, 4Runner, Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius and RAV4, 2009-2010 Avalon, FJ Cruiser and Highlander,  Hybrid 2010-2013 Corolla, Sienna and Tundra, 2009-2013 Highlander and Venza, 2012 Prius V, 2010-2012 Sequoia

The Dealers will be inspecting and recalibrating these airbag sensors at the beginning of this month. Southeast Toyota Distributors can be reached at 1-954-429-2000, or Toyota can be reached at 1-800-331-4331.

If you or a loved one have been personally injured due to a faulty product such as an airbag, it is necessary to seek legal counsel. These products can cause serious accidents and even death. The Hotel Fire (Photo credit: Jordon)

Officials believe something was used to ignite a fast-burning fire that raced through a San Pedro motel. The fire occurred early yesterday. This fire forced one person to jump off the two-story building. This fire seriously burning one person and senta total of 14 people to the hospital.

When the firefighters pulled up to the scene they found one woman in critical condition because she jumped off the building. Other people trapped in the building were also claiming to jump out. A local Los Angeles police officer rushed in to save people trapped inside.  The fire department used ladders to rescue people on the second story.

About 150 firefighters responded and were at the scene. The fire was stopped in about 30 minutes. Detectives and investigators determined arson was likely a part of the incident. According to local neighbors, police and paramedics are routinely called to the location for medical emergencies, fights and drug-related problems.

One man who has lived at the motel for seven years said he wouldn’t be surprised if the fire was started intentionally because there often are fights and problems among management, residents and visitors who come in off the street. The resident, who would not give his name, said he was awake when he heard commotion outside his room at about 3:30 a.m.

The Long Beach chapter of the American Red Cross is currently providing housing and food for the displaced residents. The firefighters were quick to bring them doughnuts while they waited for hours outside the building.  About 20 displaced men, women and teenagers were taken to the Anderson Senior Center.

Monica Zosaya, a local resident said, “My cat was acting weird and I opened the door and smoke just came in. I slammed the door and thought: `Get dressed, get the cat and get out.’ But the doorknob was hot. I went to the window and yelled `help.’ They said to push out the screen, and then they put the ladder up.”

Being a part of a tragic fire can be mentally and physically damaging. It is necessary to seek help after an incident such as this. If you have been in an accident like this it is necessary to reach a personal injury lawyer for a free consultation.
