Milton Olin Jr., 65-years-old ex-Napster executive and of Woodland Hills, Calif., died Sunday in the 22000 block of Mulholland Highway. At 1:05 p.m., the bicycle he was riding “collided with” the patrol car, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

According to Lt. Michael Williams of the sheriff’s Malibu/Lost Hills Station, the deputy’s cruiser was traveling in the same direction as Olin. The stretch of Mulholland Highway where the collision occurred has a painted bike lane. The unidentified deputy was transported to the hospital with minor injuries and the patrol car was towed from the scene. Olin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Olin was an executive at both Napster and A&M Records and an entertainment lawyer by trade. He’s listed as an advisor to U.S. Equity Holdings on their webpage. He is also listed as a founding partner at the law firm Altschul & Olin. At Napster he was chief operating officer after a 14-year career at A&M records.

This comes just after a new law signed by Calif. Gov. Jerry Brown states that drivers must stay at least 3 feet away from cyclists when passing.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Lost Hills/Malibu Station.

New law gives cyclists 3-foot buffer from drivers

New law gives cyclists 3-foot buffer from drivers

Under a new law signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, California drivers must stay at least 3 feet away from cyclists when passing.

The proposal, bill AB1371, came from Assemblyman Steven Bradford, D-Gardena. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who was injured in a bicycle accident in 2010, sponsored the bill. The law protects cyclists from aggressive drivers and protects cyclist safety.

Currently, the law states that drivers must keep a safe distance when passing cyclists, but does not specify how far a “safe distance” is.

The new law goes into effect Sept. 16, 2014.

Brown vetoed two previous bills in 2011 and 2012, which would have allowed drivers to cross the yellow line or require them to slow to 15 mph when passing. The Governor raised concerns that those bills could hold the state liable if there was an accident resulting in the adherence to the requirements of the two previous bills.

Senate Minority Leader Bob Huff, R-Diamond Bar, along with other lawmakers opposed the bill, saying that it would be too difficult for drivers to accurately judge a 3-foot distance while driving.

Bradford’s spokesman, Matt Stauffer, said in an interview with the local NBC affiliate that the overall aim is to remind drivers and cyclists that they have a responsibility to behave safely on the road and that case-by-case enforcement will be up to the local police.

Violating new 3-foot requirement would be punishable by fines starting at $35. If passing results in a crash that injures the cyclist, the driver could face a $220 fine.

On June 24, 2012, Rocky Martin was riding his bike and hit a pedestrian. The victim was injured in the accident and now Martin has pleaded guilty to assault.

Martin was riding east on Santa Monica Boulevard at the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica, California prior to the accident. He then ran a red light on his bicycle and struck a person crossing the street.

The victim who was not identified suffered serious injuries.

Now, almost a year later, Martin has received his sentencing. He will serve three years on felony probation and 30 days of community services for his actions.

Though Los Angeles is heavily reliant on vehicles for transportation, bicycling is becoming much more prominent, especially in areas like Santa Monica. The police claim that they are cracking down on bicycle infractions to ensure safety of the others around riders.

Santa Monica Police Sergeant Richard Lewis states that the department plans to “focus on bicycle violations” from July through September to decrease these types of incidents.

If you or someone you know has been injured in an accident, whether in a vehicle, on a bike, or on foot, contact a Los Angeles accident attorney. Late last night in Florence, California, a bicyclist was killed by a motorist. The driver of the vehicle was fleeing from the police due to his involvement in a shooting that took place moments before.

The victim’s identity is unknown at this moment, but he was described by authorities as a Hispanic male aged 30 to 40 years old.

The driver, whose identity has not been revealed yet either, was being chased by the cops after a shooting that occurred around East 84th Street and South Avalon Boulevard. Apparently, there was a dispute between the driver and his girlfriend and the man fired three shots into her car.

The police found him driving and followed him with cruisers and a helicopter. Once he reached East 84th Street and South Central Avenue, his dangerous driving killed the cyclist.

The driver dragged the victim across the street and then attempted to run once more. The police caught up to him and took him into custody. They are still searching for the gun that was used in the initial shooting.

Accidents are a tragic part of our lives as drivers and as cyclists. Thankfully the police was able to arrest the criminal in this instance, because many times drivers get away with it. Last night, a Dodge Charger chased a Pontiac until they each ended up in a multiple car pileup. The people in the Pontiac are suspected of committing a drive-by shooting occurring at a fundraiser at West 79th and South Hoover Street that initiated the chase. Moments later, the two cars ran a red light and crashed into the cross traffic.

The cars collided in the intersection of Broadway and Manchester. The Pontiac hit a Saturn that was driving east on Manchester and the Saturn driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Charger ran into a pickup truck and the truck then collided with two parked cars and a man on a bicycle. The Charger driver is currently in critical condition, but everyone else involved in the accident suffered only minor injuries.

The driver and a passenger of the Pontiac fled from the scene and are currently being hunted for the drive-by shooting as well as the accident. A gun was found in the Pontiac that points to its inhabitants’ involvement in the shooting. A passenger from the Charger attempted to run as well, but was stopped by police on site.

This accident includes all tragic aspects of vehicles collisions. A fatality, hit-and-run, pedestrian, injuries, property damage and, even worse, it stemmed from a shooting. Los Angeles residents can only hope that justice will be served and disasters like this do not happen in the future.

Reward Considered in Efforts to Solve a Los Angeles Hit and Run Case

On March 24, 18-year-old David Granados was killed after being hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Valley Glen. The driver, suspected to own a 2000 or 2004 Mercedes Benz M-Class SUV, hit the bicyclist and then sped away without stopping to help. Now Los Angeles is considering offering a $50,000 reward to find the driver who killed Granados.

Granados was riding his bike, crossing Oxnard St. on Bellaire Avenue when the vehicle ran a red light going westbound on Oxnard and hit him in the intersection. Surveillance cameras show the accident; however, the identity of the driver is unclear in the footage as well as the exact model of the car.

The 18-year-old was immediately taken to the hospital, but died the next day.

The City Council must approve the reward before it can be allowed; however, if there is any information about the case, contact the police immediately.

Bicycle accidents occur frequently, especially in Los Angeles. Not all streets have bike lanes, and even the ones that do cannot always encompass a cyclist sufficiently due to traffic, construction zones, buses, etc. While driving in a vehicle, it is crucial to be aware of everything that surrounds the car. That includes motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

The mothers and families of the victims of a fatal car crash expressed how upset and outraged they are. This is because the man accused of drinking and driving is a police officer.

This is regarding a car accident that happened late, last Friday night.  Police say North Chicago police office Terrell Garrett was drunk and out celebrating his 35th birthday.  The Officer turned onto Lake Shore Drive and was going the wrong-way and hit another car head-on.

He’s currently hospitalized and a judge this weekend gave him a $500.00 dollar bond. That means if he can post $50,000, he can go free with electronic monitoring until the trial.

The victims of a horrible California raceway accident have been identified by the authorities. The accident occurred in the Marysville Park in Santa Rosa. The race car was being driven by Chase Johnson. Johnson lost control of the vehicle and careened off the track. He slammed into the pit row where he unfortunately struck his 68 year old Uncle and a 14- year-old.  The victims were Dale Wondergem Jr. and Marcus Johnson.  Johnson was not injured in the crash.

Wondergem owned one of the cars at the track but not the car involved in the accident.

Steven Blakesley, the race announcer, said Chase Johnson was driving his car on the track at about 90 mph when it couldn’t make a turn.

“There must have been a mechanical problem,” Blakesley said. “The car didn’t slow down.”

As you can tell, accidents can happen at any time. Chase Johnson definitely did not expect to be part of an accident like this.
