Body Found in Trunk of Burning Car

A body of a man was found in the trunk of a burning car Monday in Panorama City.

A call of a car fire near Terra Bella St. and Vena Ave. came in around 10:20 p.m. to the Los Angeles City fire department, said officials.

After firefighters responded and put out the burning car, they discovered the body of a man inside the trunk The burning car was an Audi A4.

The identity of the man wasn’t readily available, but officials said he appeared between 25 and 35 years old. The cause of his death is still under investigation. The coroner is working on identifying the man and his cause of death.

“We’ll have to wait for the coroner’s conclusion to find out, but the murder does show signs of gang or narcotics influence,” said Lt. Paul Vernon in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

“The fire fully engulfed the passenger compartment, but never made it to the trunk,” Lt. Vernon said.

The death appears to be gang-related and homicide detectives have taken over the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.

A driver was rescued from a burning car Wednesday after a crash on the 405 Freeway, authorities said. Two civilians and a Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad officer helped rescue the driver.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at 1:52 p.m. on the northbound side of the freeway at Ventura Boulevard. The uniformed Bomb Squad officer and an off-duty battalion chief with the Los Angeles Fire Department happened to drive past the scene, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.

The battalion chief called 911, and the officer and other motorists rescued the single occupant from the car, authorities said.

The accident happened when an older model Mercedes-Benz station wagon hit the center divider several times after weaving in and out of traffic according to the California Highway Patrol’s Traffic Incident Information website.

After the car crashed, the vehicle was engulfed in flames, the California Highway Patrol website stated. Firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the blaze.

The police officer that helped rescue the driver was treated for minor injuries, but was later taken to an urgent care facility by an LAPD supervisor, authorities said.

The man pulled from the burning car was transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries. It’s not known if charges have been filed against the driver, or the status of any impending investigation.
