Arson Suspected In String of Vehicle, Trash Fires

The Los Angeles arson investigators are investigating a string of vehicle and trash fires over the past few week. The fires have occurred in and around the Echo Park area.

The first suspected arson fire was reported on Feb. 19. The fire started between midnight and 4 a.m. in the 1300 North Portia St. said Los Angeles Fire Department Senior Arson Investigator David Liske in an interview with CBS Los Angeles. The fire engulfed three city trashcans that also damaged a nearby car.

This was the first of four fires.

In the same morning, another trashcan was set on fire on Sunset Boulevard and McDuff Street, said Liske in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

On Feb. 25, a vehicle fire was reported in the 1400 block of Portia Street, near Galveston Street. The fire started around 2 a.m. and is also suspected to be arson.

Another incident is suspected to be a failed arson attempt. Leaves were found on a park car at Laveta Terrace and Sunset Boulevard, said Los Angeles Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Ruda said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

“Sometimes, arsonists begin small,” Ruda said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles. “Hopefully each fire doesn’t get bigger.”

River Rescue Called Off

With the torrential rainfall over the last few days taking its toll on local police and fire personnel, a river rescue was called off Saturday morning after a reported car in the river turned out to only be a concrete barrier.

A jogger, running along the Los Angeles River, contacted fire officials after reportedly seeing a car in the raging river water.

Firefighters responded when they received other reports of a vehicle in the water near the 5 Freeway and Zoo Dr. in the Los Feliz area of Los Angeles.

Fire officials arrived on the scene around 8 a.m. and searched the area. Aerial footage showed several Los Angeles City firefighters in the area investigating the reports.

With the wicked weather, there are things you can do to be safe on the roads. Keep your eyes scanning the road ahead, looking for any potential hazards. Slow down, this will help compensate for a car’s longer stopping distance in the rain.

If a car begins to slip and lose traction, don’t slam on the brakes. In the rain, the limited traction will cause brakes to lock up and lengthen a car’s stopping distance.

Body Found in Trunk of Burning Car

A body of a man was found in the trunk of a burning car Monday in Panorama City.

A call of a car fire near Terra Bella St. and Vena Ave. came in around 10:20 p.m. to the Los Angeles City fire department, said officials.

After firefighters responded and put out the burning car, they discovered the body of a man inside the trunk The burning car was an Audi A4.

The identity of the man wasn’t readily available, but officials said he appeared between 25 and 35 years old. The cause of his death is still under investigation. The coroner is working on identifying the man and his cause of death.

“We’ll have to wait for the coroner’s conclusion to find out, but the murder does show signs of gang or narcotics influence,” said Lt. Paul Vernon in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

“The fire fully engulfed the passenger compartment, but never made it to the trunk,” Lt. Vernon said.

The death appears to be gang-related and homicide detectives have taken over the investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the police.

18-Year-Old Allegedly Leads Police on High-Speed Chase

An 18-year-old was pulled from a white BMW after a high-speed chase ended on Pacific Coast Highway Thursday night. The chase allegedly exceeded 100 mph.

The incident began around 8:30 p.m. when police tried to stop the white BMW 7-Series on the 5 Freeway near Indiana St, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The 18-year-old driver is an UV Irvine student from China. When the roadway was clear, an officer attempted a PIT maneuver on the BMW. Rather than spinning out, the car simply swerved. The driver quickly pulled over and surrendered.

The chase ended on Pacific Coast Highway near Lunita Rd. around 9:15 p.m. The police handcuffed the 18-year-old and two passengers and put them all into squad cars.

The driver said the BMW was a new car and he recently obtained his driver’s license in an interview with NBC Los Angeles. He said he did not understand why he was being chased and was afraid of the California Highway Patrol.

According to officials, the student followed most of the traffic laws during the high-speed chase. He may not be facing as many charges as he would had he disobeyed the traffic laws.

Around 8:24 p.m. Thursday, an unidentified man was reported to be running in and out of traffic smashing a metal weapon on car windows, according to one driver.

“[I thought], ‘Oh my God, get me out of here.’ It was a scary feeling,” Priscilla Garcia told CBS LA of the moment she says the man came upon her car.

“When he did that, I looked at the cops to do something because he was not going to stop,” she said.

The man ignored orders once deputies arrived on the scene, continued his attack in the intersection of Shangri-La Drive and Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon County.

Police then opened fire on the man, shooting him multiple times in the chest after he charged at them with a knife. According to a press release, the man “appeared unscathed by the shooting,” and “continued his erratic behavior.”

The deputies then stepped back toward their squad cars when the man, now wielding a second weapon of a knife, charged at them again.

“The suspect was struck by gunfire multiple times on the upper torso,” according to officials.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said no one else was harmed during the incident.

Brian Mulligan lost a lawsuit against two Los Angeles Police Department officers after a jury cleared them Friday of any wrongdoing in an arrest.

Mulligan, a former bank executive, alleged that he was a victim of excessive police force, testifying that LAPD officers John Miller and James Nichols beat him in 2012.

The defense showed evidence that Mulligan was in a drug-induced psychotic state. Apparently, he snorted “bath salts,” an amphetamine-like drug, prior to the arrest. Two days before his encounter with LAPD officers Miller and Nichols, Mulligan was recorded telling a Glendale police officer he had snorted the drug.

Mulligan testified that after his encounter with the Glendale officer, he went to Eagle Rock to get medical marijuana. Numerous witnesses testified that on the night of his LAPD encounter in May 2012, he was alone and yelling; trying to open car doors and saying someone was following him.

When the two officers responded, Mulligan passed a field sobriety test. The officers testified that Mulligan wanted to go to a motel and sleep it off, but an hour later, he was found in the middle of traffic trying to carjack a moving vehicle.

The prosecution claimed Mulligan didn’t deserve to be beaten regardless of his mental state at the time. Doctors had differing opinions on whether a baton caused Mulligan’s injuries. It was not known if the injuries were sustained when he resisted arrest and slammed his own face on the pavement. The defense noted Nichols did not have his baton at the time of Mulligan’s arrest.

Woman found shot dead in downtown Los Angeles

Homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 27-year-old woman. Detectives are asking for the public’s help in finding whoever fatally shot the 27-year-old woman inside a vehicle in downtown Los Angeles.

Officers discovered 27-year-old Sonia Soto slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle in the 600 block of Santa Fe Avenue in Los Angeles late Friday night. She was found with a single gunshot wound according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Soto was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said when paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived. No other information about the scene or circumstances surrounding the shooting have been released. There are currently no leads on potential suspect(s) who could have committed the crime.

Investigators are working to determine if there was a motive for the crime, yet are asked for the public’s help Saturday for any information that could be helpful.

In the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released in May, there were 33,687 deaths from car accidents and 38,364 suicides in 2010.

Suicide, typically viewed as an issue with teens and the elderly, is increasing amongst middle-aged Americans, ages 35-64; many baby boomers are facing economic uncertainty that is then combined with easy access to prescription painkillers. Poisoning deaths were up 24 percent over the 10-year period from 1999 to 2010.

From 1999 to 2010, the suicide rate among Americans ages 35 to 64 rose by nearly 30 percent, to 17.6 deaths per 100,000 people, up from 13.7. While suicide rate is up amongst both middle-aged men and women, the suicide rate for middle-aged men was 27.3 deaths per 100,000, while for women it was 8.1 deaths per 100,000.

“It is the baby boomer group where we see the highest rates of suicide,” said the C.D.C.’s deputy director, Ileana Arias, in an interview with The New York Times. “There may be something about that group, and how they think about life issues and their life choices that may make a difference.” Dr. Arias noted that the higher suicide rates might be due to a series of life and financial circumstances unique to the baby boomer generation. They are often coping with caring for aging parents while still providing financial and emotional support to adult children.

The increase in suicides is unsettling as there is still a stigma around it.

The film community is mourning the loss of one of their own today. Paul Walker, 40, most notable for his appearance in the film franchise Fast and Furious, died Saturday afternoon in a one-vehicle car crash.

Walker was a passenger in a red 2005 Porsche GT, which was owned and driven by Walker’s friend and Always Evolving Performance Motors owner Roger Rodas, 38, who also died in the crash.

“Speed was a factor in the solo vehicle collision,” the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Walker and Rodas were leaving a charity event for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The Porsche crashed into a utility pole and burst into flames in Santa Clarita, Calif.

Considered a true car guy in the film industry, condolences poured from both the car and film industry.

Walker is survived by his 15-year-old daughter, Meadow. Rodas is survived by his wife Kristine and two children.

Car crash and false report of a weapon scare LAX travelers

Last Friday the combination of a vicious car crash that frightened passengers into thinking gunshots were fired, and the false report of a man with a weapon caused thousands of flight delays at Los Angeles International Airport.

At 7:30 p.m., police received a phone call about possible shots fired near the airport. Upon further investigation, police soon discovered the source of the sound was the result of a car crash outside between Terminals 4 and 5. After hearing the crash, airport travelers began evacuating on their own.

Many people were sensitive to what occurred on Nov. 1, when Paul Anthony Ciancia opened fire in Terminal 3, killing a TSA officer and wounding four others. The sound of the car crash caused slight panic in passengers.

After the car crash, at about 8:20 p.m., crowds were seen gathered outside the airport as police evacuated Terminals 4 and 5 after receiving an anonymous phone call about a man with a gun at gate 45.

Police searched the terminals and found no weapon. Passengers were screened by security before being allowed to reenter the terminals.

About 4,600 passengers were affected by the incidents. Delta and American airlines reported 60 delayed flights.

At this time, no information was available regarding the investigation into the anonymous phone call.
