Massive Power Outage in San Diego County and South Orange County Causes Headaches for Drivers

Massive Power Outage in San Diego County and South Orange County Causes Headaches for Drivers

A massive power outage affecting all of San Diego County, southern Orange County, Imperial Valley, and across the border into Mexico is making travel of all sorts difficult for people this afternoon and evening. According to officials from San Diego Gas & Electric, a system event affecting a transmission line between Arizona and California seems to have caused the outage that occurred on September 8, 2011. Both major connections that deliver power to the San Diego area as well as the Ensenada and Mexicali areas in Mexico have been affected.

Coming just around the time of the afternoon commute, the power outage has created headaches for motorists. Mayor Jerry Sanders has urged San Diegans to avoid all roads and freeways, unless people have an emergency. Other commuters were stranded when San Diego area trolleys shut down, as well as commuter trains. Flights due to leave Lindbergh Field have been grounded. Officials state that the power may not be restored until Friday.

As many as 1.4 million customers are without power. San Diego Police Officers are controlling traffic at intersections in the city of San Diego. Officials are urging people to exercise caution and activate their emergency preparedness plans, if they have one. With so many areas lacking power, the chances for car accidents rise.
