Three years ago, Leroy Grissom was killed by a police officer in Culver City. The twenty-seven year old was shot three times in the back after being pulled over by a police officer who suspected him of robbing an electronics store.

Though he did commit the crime, he did not pose any additional threats once pulled over in the parking lot and he was unarmed. Because of this, the attack on him was unwarranted.

Grissom died from the gunshot wounds. His family outraged by the cop’s actions, filed a federal lawsuit against the Culver City Police Department for the wrongful death.

Wednesday, the federal jury found the defendant guilty and awarded the family $8.8 million in damages. The police department is unsure whether an appeal will be filed yet or not.

Despite Grissom committing a crime, there is no excuse for a police officer to shoot a civilian without any threat present. Grissom was unarmed and cooperating; however, he was still killed.

LAPD Racial Profiling Goes to College

Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Bell 206 ...

As the school year comes to an end at University of Southern California (USC), students who are anxious to graduate or to complete another year look for experiences in which they can relax and avoid the stresses of upcoming finals and deciding grades.

Nate Howard, a senior at USC, attempted to provide an event like that last Friday night. He threw a party at his house near the campus to celebrate the upcoming graduation that was registered with campus police and required student IDs at the door to ensure that it would not get out of hand. However, at about 2 a.m. Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department arrived in a manner that suggested it had gotten severely out of hand.

Over 80 LAPD officers showed up to the house in riot gear and with a helicopter after receiving noise complaints from the neighbors. They used excessive force to empty the house of students, applied handcuffs and even arrested six students – Howard was one of them.

The reason for LAPD’s unnecessarily intense reaction to noise complaints? Perhaps the fact that the party was comprised of mostly African-American students, so prejudices and stereotypes were utilized.

Since the event, USC has seen protests and even held a meeting with LAPD on campus. Howard was accompanied in his protest by over 100 students that held signs reading, “We are scholars not criminals.” The party organizer also criticizes LAPD’s priorities as it sent 80 officers to one party when they could/should have been doing something else.

The next day after the protest, a panel of LAPD officers spoke with a packed audience of students in a USC auditorium that holds 1200. LAPD Captain Paul Snell explained how the police responded to a noise complaint and felt threatened, but “[he does] not believe that this was race-based.”

However, based on the fact that there was a party across the street from Howard’s house that was attended by mostly white students and was handled in a much more tame way, that doesn’t seem true. Sarah Tither-Kaplan explains how her party was just as loud and police arrived after receiving noise complaints, but no one was arrested or forced out.

LAPD assures the students that it will look further into the matter after hearing that all attendees of the meeting felt that the attack was race-based. Depending on LAPD’s next move, it may face trial for a lawsuit of racial discrimination.

DiGiorno and California Pizza Kitchen Frozen Pizzas Recalled

California Pizza Kitchen logo

California Pizza Kitchen logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

The two popular brands of frozen pizza made by Nestle Pizza Company were found to have plastic pieces embedded in their products. The total amount of pizzas that are affected is unknown; however, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Safety Inspection Service and the Food and Drug Administration have administered the recall in order to prevent any further issues.

The USDA is recalling the California Pizza Kitchen Limited Edition Grilled Chicken with Cabernet Sauce frozen pizza and the DiGiorno Crispy Flatbread Pizza Tuscan Style Chicken frozen pizza. The FDA is additionally recalling the California Pizza Kitchen Crispy Thin Crust White frozen pizza and the DiGiorno Pizzeria! Biana/White frozen pizza.

The defective pizzas were produced during February 26 and March 9 and shipped nationwide.

Nestle and the FSIS and FDA were made aware of the issue after consumers complained about finding the plastic pieces in the food. One customer even chipped a tooth while eating the product. Apparently the spinach that was used in making these pizzas is the culprit.

Any customers who have experienced issues with the listed products should contact Nestle for further instructions.

Recalls can be dangerous or they can simply be inconvenient. Luckily for Nestle, no serious harm has been brought to its customers and hopefully this recall will prevent any future damage. If you or someone you know has had any experience with a defective product, contact the Accident Attorneys’ Group today to find out what you can do.

Last night, a Dodge Charger chased a Pontiac until they each ended up in a multiple car pileup. The people in the Pontiac are suspected of committing a drive-by shooting occurring at a fundraiser at West 79th and South Hoover Street that initiated the chase. Moments later, the two cars ran a red light and crashed into the cross traffic.

The cars collided in the intersection of Broadway and Manchester. The Pontiac hit a Saturn that was driving east on Manchester and the Saturn driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Charger ran into a pickup truck and the truck then collided with two parked cars and a man on a bicycle. The Charger driver is currently in critical condition, but everyone else involved in the accident suffered only minor injuries.

The driver and a passenger of the Pontiac fled from the scene and are currently being hunted for the drive-by shooting as well as the accident. A gun was found in the Pontiac that points to its inhabitants’ involvement in the shooting. A passenger from the Charger attempted to run as well, but was stopped by police on site.

This accident includes all tragic aspects of vehicles collisions. A fatality, hit-and-run, pedestrian, injuries, property damage and, even worse, it stemmed from a shooting. Los Angeles residents can only hope that justice will be served and disasters like this do not happen in the future.

Trial Commences in the Case Where a Teen Girl and Boyfriend Kill Her Parents

The Court Room

In October 2011, then-15-year-old Cynthia Alvarez and her then-16-year-old boyfriend Giovanni Gallardo allegedly murdered Alvarez’s mother and stepfather, apparently over an argument regarding Gallardo.

Gloria Villalta, the 58-year-old mother of Alvarez was attacked by the two teenagers upon entering her Compton house. The couple then hid Villalta’s body until Jose Lara, Alvarez’s 51-year-old stepfather, entered the house and was attacked with a knife and a baseball bat.

The two bodies were buried separately. Villalta was found in a Santa Fe Springs vacant lot and Lara was discovered in Long Beach, in a lot near Jordan High School.

Opening statements begin today for Alvarez’s trial and Gallardo’s case will begin later. Despite them being underage at the time of the alleged murders, the two will be charged as adult criminals and can be convicted with life in prison.

It is always terrifying to hear of horrors like these, but they do happen. Despite what occurs, it is always helpful to remember that the law is working constantly to ensure that wrongdoers do not get away with their crimes.

Reward Considered in Efforts to Solve a Los Angeles Hit and Run Case

Bicycle after collision, Scott and Haight

On March 24, 18-year-old David Granados was killed after being hit by a vehicle while riding his bicycle in Valley Glen. The driver, suspected to own a 2000 or 2004 Mercedes Benz M-Class SUV, hit the bicyclist and then sped away without stopping to help. Now Los Angeles is considering offering a $50,000 reward to find the driver who killed Granados.

Granados was riding his bike, crossing Oxnard St. on Bellaire Avenue when the vehicle ran a red light going westbound on Oxnard and hit him in the intersection. Surveillance cameras show the accident; however, the identity of the driver is unclear in the footage as well as the exact model of the car.

The 18-year-old was immediately taken to the hospital, but died the next day.

The City Council must approve the reward before it can be allowed; however, if there is any information about the case, contact the police immediately.

Bicycle accidents occur frequently, especially in Los Angeles. Not all streets have bike lanes, and even the ones that do cannot always encompass a cyclist sufficiently due to traffic, construction zones, buses, etc. While driving in a vehicle, it is crucial to be aware of everything that surrounds the car. That includes motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Dog Attack in Riverside, California

American Pit bull Terrier (Schatzi)

American Pit bull Terrier (Schatzi) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Two young toddlers, ages one and two years old, were taken to the hospital after they were attacked by an eight year old pit bull. The boys were playing in a family friend’s backyard when the friend’s dog went for them. It is unknown whether the boys were alone in the yard or if the parents were present before the assault.

The dog has been quarantined and will be moved to a humane facility.

As of now, it is a mystery as to what caused the attack on the boys. It is possible that the dog lashed out without any provocation, or it is possible that the boys were harassing the dog prior to the attack. It is easy to forget that dogs are animals that are programmed with instincts and if/when they are feeling threatened, they react as any animal would.

Pit bulls were bred to fight. Now that dog-fighting is illegal across America, the breed has been brought into homes, but their nature to protect and attack once threatened cannot be easily erased. It is vital that pit bull owners know how to train this breed and do not abuse its over protectiveness.

Pit bull terriers and rottweilers have accounted for 73% of the fatal dog attacks since 2005. This number includes adult and child deaths. In fact, dog attacks are the fifth highest reason that child go to emergency rooms due to voluntary activities (i.e. playing sports).

Being attacked by a dog is a serious issue. Not only can an attack cause disfigurement or fatalities, it also demands serious medical attention. Today, attack victims suffer over $1 billion in financial losses annually. Not only are medical bills high, but the loss in wages, permanent disabilities, possible property damage, and more create an enormous monetary setback.

Having an attorney help sort through the insurance claims and damages is vital with dog attacks. Contact one of our great injury lawyers today.

Ways to Beat Gas Prices

Los Angeles View 2011

Los Angeles View 2011 (Photo credit: █ Slices of Light █▀ ▀ ▀)

Living in Los Angeles puts a car through torture. The basic maintenance is required but additionally Los Angeles drivers must repair tires and axles more frequently due to the latest pothole; replace brake pads at twice as often as recommended because they are filed down to the rotors weekly by daily traffic jams; and change oil before 3,000 miles from fear of a burned up engine caused by the hour-long drives for eight-mile trips. Since you’re already dealing with these issues and extra costs, saving some cash on filling up could be quite helpful.

Out here, regular maintenance is automatic as we rely on our cars so heavily; however, simply changing the oil as needed is not the only upkeep that you can do to save money on gas. Factors that affect miles per gallon are engine tune-ups, wheel alignments, tire pressure, and filter replacements. If you keep your car maintained in these areas, your gas will be consumed correctly rather than wasted.

It is hard to avoid this type of driving on Los Angeles freeways; however, the constant and immediate stop-and-goes burn up gas as well. In traffic, by stopping leisurely rather than slamming on the brakes then immediately accelerating once more only to skid to a halt again will conserve fuel. This is also an excellent way to avoid car accidents, which in turn would alleviate traffic.

Driving at high speeds and high RPMs destroy gas conservation as well. Though it’s tempting to rev the engine and go from zero to eighty the moment you get a break in traffic, driving like that uses up a large amount of gas. Going from zero to sixty-five in a span of a few more seconds will be appreciated by your gas tank and your wallet.

Towing obviously eats up fuel, but also simply carrying large items can decrease your miles per gallon. Bikes, tools, even roof racks can cause an increase in the fuel required. If you don’t need these items in or on your car every day, remove them.

There are other tips for drivers to save money on gas, but their results are debatable. For one, it has been suggested that filling up in the morning is better because the gas is stored cooler, and hot gas expands. This way you are getting a full gallon’s worth rather than expanded gas that may not be an entire gallon. However, the gas that comes to the station is expected to already be hot and the time spent in the cool underground is likely too short to change enough to make an impact. However, filling up in the cool morning always will not take anything away: you could be getting more gas (awesome), or you’ll be getting the same amount that would be received later in the day.

It could also be helpful to refuel when you are not on empty. This could decrease the amount of air that goes into you tank, but again it may not make a real difference.

Saving gas is important, as is being a safe driver. If you think filling up your car is expensive, try being involved in a car accident. The expenses can get out of hand and without an attorney there to help file insurance claims and determine damages, you may pay more than you should. How Weather Affects Driving Conditions

Driving Cars in a Traffic Jam

Driving Cars in a Traffic Jam (Photo credit: epSos.de)

Everyone knows that rain and snow cause more accidents, so people have become more cautious when driving in those conditions; however, there are dangers that can occur while driving on the best of days, when people are not as responsive.

An interesting condition to consider the next time it’s warm is humidity levels and their effects on the road. Changes in moisture alter asphalt, melting and remolding it. The roads then become cracked, raveled and full of holes. Mixing all of that with the constant amount of vehicles zooming atop it creates a very hazardous street or highway. But most drivers do not think of that when it’s a good day for the beach.

Wind speed is also a major culprit in car accidents. Heavy gusts can occur in any weather and when it is sunny outside, drivers will not notice the wind until it has almost forced them into another lane. Depending on the location and surrounding lands, wind can impair visibility by blowing dirt or trash around the freeways. There is also the added risk of larger items being carried into the driving lanes.

Rain and snow obstruct a driver’s vision as well as the roads on which he/she is driving. The cement or asphalt beneath the vehicle is now covered with a slippery coat that does not stabilize car tires well. People also decrease their speed (which is recommended) and that causes sudden changes in traffic flow. The easiest way to get rear-ended is by someone who did not immediately notice the stopped car in front of him/her.

Fog can be just as dangerous and as unpredictable as rain or snow. Light fog is manageable, though irritating; heavy fog is chaotic. Brake lights are barely visible from feet away and each driver drives at a different speed, unaware of what’s ahead. Accidents are very likely in these conditions and traffic flow decreases to a stop.

Weather plays a major role in shaping drivers’ commutes. Whether it simply affects the speed of traffic or momentarily blinds people, it can be very dangerous. Traffic collisions can happen at any time and during any forecast, and finding the right car accident attorney is important.
