Two Big-Rigs Overturn on I-10 Near Coachella

Two big-rigs overturned early this morning, September 30, 2011, in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 in Riverside County. The accident, which occurred around 3:31 a.m. east of the Coachella Valley stopped eastbound traffic near the Cactus City Rest Area, and caused a traffic backup five miles long. California Highway Patrol closed the eastbound freeway at Dillon Road.

Crews righted both overturned big-rigs by 10:00 a.m., but the freeway was still a mess from spilled fuel. Roughly 40 to 60 gallons of fuel leaked onto the freeway, but according to the fire department, the spill was contained on the shoulder.

Both people who were driving the big-rigs freed themselves from their vehicles after the accident, the Riverside County Fire Department reported. One of the drivers suffered moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital. Paramedics treated the other driver at the scene of the collision, but the patient did not want to go to a hospital.

Interstate 10 is a main transportation corridor between California and Arizona. According to the California Department of Transportation, the eastbound lanes of the interstate will stay closed until noon Friday, and possibly later.
