Video calling has come a long way in the past few decades. It began in the fifties and was known as videotelephony. Between the fifties and the nineties, still images would be portrayed through projector type apparatus refreshing the image of the person on the other line every few seconds over what is known as a POTS-type telephone line connection. The technology is more akin to slow scan TV systems. Technologic evolution and the development of video codec and high bandwidth internet communication services over the past few years have helped speed up the process and the practicality of video communication.
