A 27-year-old man who was serving in the Navy died Thursday morning in a crash involving four vehicles on state Route 15 in San Diego. Off-duty San Diego Police Officer Killed While Helping Fatally Injured Driver on I-15

Off-duty San Diego Police Officer Killed  While Helping Fatally Injured Driver on I-15

An off-duty San Diego police offer was killed early Saturday morning when he ran to help the driver of a stalled car he had rear-ended on Interstate 15.  Officer Jason Prokop had been driving on the southbound freeway around 3:05 a.m. on October 1, 2011 when he struck a Honda that wasn’t moving in the no. 2 lane, a little south of Mira Mesa Boulevard. Only moments later, another vehicle also struck the Honda, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Art Athans, as reported by CBS 8. Two additional vehicles then crashed, which caused minor injuries to the drivers.

34-year-old Prokop, a 5-year police veteran, exited his car and dashed across 2 freeway lanes to the Honda that he had hit. He was hit and killed by an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer who was driving a Toyota, CBS 8 reports.

The 21-year-old woman who had been driving the Honda also died. She was Elvia Ruby Gomez, who, her family said, moved to Escondido and wanted to be a doctor. California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. As of the news story, it wasn’t clear why the Honda had stopped on the freeway. All of the people involved in the accident had been wearing seatbelts.

Jason Prokop is the sixth San Diego police officer to die in the past year, the San Diego Police Officers Association says. Prokop lived with his young family in Arizona, and commuted to San Diego. Fellow officers had only kind words to say about him.

The six-vehicle pile-up delivered tragic loss to those who knew the victims. We hold them in our thoughts in their time of sorrow.

Massive Power Outage in San Diego County and South Orange County Causes Headaches for Drivers

Massive Power Outage in San Diego County and South Orange County Causes Headaches for Drivers

A massive power outage affecting all of San Diego County, southern Orange County, Imperial Valley, and across the border into Mexico is making travel of all sorts difficult for people this afternoon and evening. According to officials from San Diego Gas & Electric, a system event affecting a transmission line between Arizona and California seems to have caused the outage that occurred on September 8, 2011. Both major connections that deliver power to the San Diego area as well as the Ensenada and Mexicali areas in Mexico have been affected.

Coming just around the time of the afternoon commute, the power outage has created headaches for motorists. Mayor Jerry Sanders has urged San Diegans to avoid all roads and freeways, unless people have an emergency. Other commuters were stranded when San Diego area trolleys shut down, as well as commuter trains. Flights due to leave Lindbergh Field have been grounded. Officials state that the power may not be restored until Friday.

As many as 1.4 million customers are without power. San Diego Police Officers are controlling traffic at intersections in the city of San Diego. Officials are urging people to exercise caution and activate their emergency preparedness plans, if they have one. With so many areas lacking power, the chances for car accidents rise.

Rollover Crash Kills Woman in San Diego County

Early morning on , July 30, 2011, a woman died after losing control of her car, rolling it, and crashing through a fence before she hit a building on State Route 94. As reported by CBS 8 San Diego, California Highway Patrol state the 27-year-old had been driving alone, and heading east around 3:20 a.m. before she crashed her Ford Explorer.

CHP Brian Pennings said the speed the woman had been driving is not known at the time she lost control of her car. The car went down an embankment and then went onto eastbound State Route 94’s offramp at Bancroft. The victim’s vehicle then entered an intersection before tearing through a chain link fence and crashing into a building. The woman was trapped in her SUV, which had rolled over, landing on its roof.

Though the victim was wearing her seatbelt, her injuries were fatal. She died at the scene, according to Pennings. He also stated that drugs and alcohol did not seem to be involved as a cause of the crash. An investigation is continuing.

We offer condolences to those who knew this woman. Any accident brings challenges and grief, and those that are fatal are especially tragic. We hope the family and friends of this young victim find peace.
