Wildfire in California Could Still Worsen

Wildfire

Wildfire (Photo credit: agrilifetoday)

In the San Bernardino foothills, the small town of Banning is currently experiencing an intense wildfire. Though firefighters were able to calm it yesterday, the future weather conditions may expunge their progress and expand the flames.

Currently the fire rests in a 4 ½ mile area and has only claimed one house. There have been no casualties but hundreds have already evacuated their homes. The fire is moving now toward the neighboring communities of Beaumont and Cherry Valley.

The gentleman who lost his home is 53-year-old Joe Kiener. He has resided in his Banning house since the 1970s, when it was purchased by his mother. His attitude toward his loss is uplifting, though. Because he was evacuated in time, he simply feels that “losing the house is just minimal. We can rebuild.”

Despite its current secure situation, firefighters are fearful of its containment as the wind speed is only going to increase as the week goes on. Wind speed ranges from 30-40 mph and with gusts that strong, the fire becomes unpredictable.

With the heavy wind speeds as well as the dry state of the land in Banning, the fire could continue blazing for a longer time and in more locations. It is unknown what damage this fire will cause, so it is extremely important to remain on guard and alert to evacuation notices.

San Bernardino Among Cities Rated Most Dangerous for Driving

San Bernardino Among Cities Rated Most Dangerous for Driving

Rated as one of the most dangerous cities for driving is not good news for San Bernardino, or the people who live there. CNBC’s story this week gives San Bernardino the ranking of fifth most dangerous city for this issue.

The survey included cities that had the highest number of vehicular deaths as a measure of its danger level. Examining U.S. cities with a population of 150,000, and using the most recent crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System and General Estimates System, the authors found some statistics that should alarm the people in San Bernardino.

With a population of 198,580, San Bernardino, according to the news story, has a total fatality rate of 17.12 per 100,000 people. The most recent data puts the number at 38 for the total number of fatalities. Pedestrian fatalities accounted for 15.8 percent of that number.

We’re sure people want a better safety ranking for San Bernardino. Using caution, slowing down while driving, not driving while distracted, and better education and training can improve and reduce driving risks for everyone. While we can’t control everything in life, we can do what’s in our power to create a safer community, and greater safety on the road.
