Three People Die in Moreno Valley Wrong-way Crash

Three people died in Moreno Valley Saturday night, September 17, 2011, when a car that was trying to avoid being stopped by police for a traffic violation raced in the wrong direction on a freeway off-ramp and struck a pickup head on.

As reported in The Press-Enterprise, around 9:47 p.m., a California Highway Patrol Officer attempted to stop a Jaguar on Interstate 215 for a traffic violation. The car then headed up the off-ramp from the 60 freeway going in the wrong direction. The CHP officer ceased pursuit and did not see the Jaguar after that point.

The news story reports that moments later, the officer saw smoke coming from around the bend and out of sight. When the officer drove on the ramp, he found the Jaguar had struck a Nissan pickup.

The two people in the Jaguar died, as well as the passenger in the pickup. CHP states the driver of the Jaguar was a 26-year-old who lived in Moreno Valley. No details were available for the passenger in the Jaguar. The people in the pickup were a 53-year-old and 23-year-old from Riverside. One of the victims was identified by the Riverside County coroner as 53-year-old Emeliano Perez from Moreno Valley. At Riverside Community Hospital, Perez was pronounced dead a little after midnight on Sunday morning. Authorities identified the two other victims as males from Moreno Valley, but did not provide any other details until their kin could be notified.
