A 60-year-old woman was hospitalized after being hit by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s vehicle Tuesday.

The black SUV, which was being driven by a LAPD police officer at the time, struck the woman at the intersection of 2nd and Spring Street while the vehicle was traveling east on 2nd towards City Hall. The authorities declined to identify the victim.

According to officials, the woman was alert and stable before she was rushed to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center for treatment.

“I’m very concerned about her and wish her a speedy recovery,” Garcetti said in a statement. “I look forward to speaking with her soon.”

According to security camera footage, two people got out of Garcetti’s vehicle to check on the pedestrian. Two minutes after the accident Garcetti’s vehicle pulled away. By this time, the LAPD driver had checked on the condition of the woman, talked to the officers on the scene about what had happened, and determined paramedics were on the way.

Garcetti was then taken to City Hall, but were available for interviews once investigators were ready, said Police Cmdr. Andrew Smith in an interview with Los Angeles Times.

After Garcetti was dropped off, the officer who was driving returned the vehicle to the scene.

“This, by all appearances, was a relatively minor collision, except that the mayor’s driver was involved,” Smith said in an interview with Los Angeles Times.

The accident is still under investigation.

The accident occurred around 2:40 a.m. Saturday, according to the Torrance Police Department. Responding officers and units found Glaser’s 2011 Audi R8 had collided with the west curb while traveling southbound on Palos Verdes Boulevard.

They found Glaser alone in the vehicle and pronounced him dead at the scene.

I’d say he was one of the top five criminal defense attorneys in Long Beach.”

Glaser was one of three partners at the Law Offices of Glaser, Damone and Schroeder, and Long Beach-based firm.

“I’ve known Jay since law school,” Damone said in an interview with Press-Telegram. “We graduated in 1988 (from the Southwestern University School of Law). He went into the Public Defender’s Office, then in 1993 we started our practice together as Glaser and Damone.”

A teen was killed when the car he and four other passengers were riding in crashed violently early Saturday morning. The teen killed was identified as 17-year-old Daniel Solis, of Downey.

The crash happened shortly after 2 a.m. Saturday on Rosecrans Ave. and Lakewood Blvd. According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the driver hit a curb and wrought-iron fence, causing the vehicle to roll over onto its roof, and then crash into a tree.

The vehicle, a 2008 black Cadillac, apparently went off the 101 Freeway, plowed through some trees and bushes before crashing through a chain-link fence and ending up on its side in the bottom of the wash.

The driver died at the scene. The victim has been identified as a 31-year-old male from Woodland Hills, says California Highway Patrol Officer Leland Tang.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash. It is not clear what caused the vehicle to veer off the 101 Freeway that sent it into the Wash. Another vehicle may have been involved in the accident.

Fire Station 86 discovered the vehicle around 7:15 a.m. By 7:30 a.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department tweeted that a fatal crash had occurred at the 4300 block of Vineland Ave.

The Tujunga Wash, where the car crashed, is considered a tributary of the Los Angeles River. It’s a 13-mile long stream and located just south of the crash site.

The police didn’t have any more information and have not released the name of the victim. The crash is still under investigation.

A driver was rescued from a burning car Wednesday after a crash on the 405 Freeway, authorities said. Two civilians and a Los Angeles Police Department Bomb Squad officer helped rescue the driver.

The single-vehicle crash occurred at 1:52 p.m. on the northbound side of the freeway at Ventura Boulevard. The uniformed Bomb Squad officer and an off-duty battalion chief with the Los Angeles Fire Department happened to drive past the scene, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.

The battalion chief called 911, and the officer and other motorists rescued the single occupant from the car, authorities said.

The accident happened when an older model Mercedes-Benz station wagon hit the center divider several times after weaving in and out of traffic according to the California Highway Patrol’s Traffic Incident Information website.

After the car crashed, the vehicle was engulfed in flames, the California Highway Patrol website stated. Firefighters responded quickly and extinguished the blaze.

The police officer that helped rescue the driver was treated for minor injuries, but was later taken to an urgent care facility by an LAPD supervisor, authorities said.

The man pulled from the burning car was transported to a nearby hospital with moderate injuries. It’s not known if charges have been filed against the driver, or the status of any impending investigation.

Man hospitalized after car plunges over cliff

Man hospitalized after car plunges over cliff

A man was hospitalized Friday after he drove his car over a cliff. The car landed in the ocean off of Palos Verdes in the 1300 block of Paseo del Mar, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The accident was reported around 2 a.m. The rescuers found the 19-year-old man 300 feet below the cliff. The car was partially submerged.

“It was well damaged and he was apparently trapped inside the vehicle with water rushing in,” Cpt. Don Tianaka said in an interview with CBS Los Angeles.

Reports indicate that the man may have been suicidal. As rescuers got to his location, he was seen flashing a light at rescuers to alert them of his location and condition, according to officials.

“It was reported that he said he didn’t want to drown. He did state that he did it on purpose, to drive over the side,” Cpt. Tianaka said.

A witness said the man stopped his car at the cliff’s edge and sat for a while. Then he pushed the gas pedal and drove the car over, Palos Verdes Estates police Sgt. Luke Hellinga said in an interview with the Daily Breeze.

Once the man was rescued, he was airlifted to Harbor UCLA Medical Center. He’s reported to be in serious condition. The accident is still under investigation by officials.

More people now die of suicide than in car accidents

More people now die of suicide than in car accidents

Source: (IIHS)

In the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released in May, there were 33,687 deaths from car accidents and 38,364 suicides in 2010.

Suicide, typically viewed as an issue with teens and the elderly, is increasing amongst middle-aged Americans, ages 35-64; many baby boomers are facing economic uncertainty that is then combined with easy access to prescription painkillers. Poisoning deaths were up 24 percent over the 10-year period from 1999 to 2010.

From 1999 to 2010, the suicide rate among Americans ages 35 to 64 rose by nearly 30 percent, to 17.6 deaths per 100,000 people, up from 13.7. While suicide rate is up amongst both middle-aged men and women, the suicide rate for middle-aged men was 27.3 deaths per 100,000, while for women it was 8.1 deaths per 100,000.

“It is the baby boomer group where we see the highest rates of suicide,” said the C.D.C.’s deputy director, Ileana Arias, in an interview with The New York Times. “There may be something about that group, and how they think about life issues and their life choices that may make a difference.” Dr. Arias noted that the higher suicide rates might be due to a series of life and financial circumstances unique to the baby boomer generation. They are often coping with caring for aging parents while still providing financial and emotional support to adult children.

The increase in suicides is unsettling as there is still a stigma around it.

Her tweets slowly escalated in panic as she tried desperately to reach him.

At 3:50 p.m. PT her fears were confirmed and her last tweet read, “it’s him. he died.”

Craig had left early from work not feeling well and suffered from epilepsy. He was the only fatality in the crash. The woman driving the other vehicle was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The car crash is still under investigation.
